Dystopian and utopian futures, gone and forthcoming

This time I'll show to you, and discuss, a matter of  different kind of utopian and dystopian visions of the future, of the reality, of the rebellion,  and of the Future visions of the past times and our current times. This all could and can be described as cyberpunk, or is it so? What makes an utopia as an utopia? How utopia differs from dystopia? And what really is the Essence of the Cyberpunk?

Yours Truly lifting 160 kg Deadlift as a RAW gym lift... Hard and heavy. The Way we love our cyberpunk stories... or is it? Is there any other way to tell stories of cyberpunk lives?

I know very well that this subject and matter on the hand, is wide as our world history, but still there is few ways to divide it in pieces and look at it as a matter of different views. Different ways to see behind the curtains. Different ways of imagining the unimagined. And different ways to see the many times imagined. After all, our lifes, life struggels, our societies, our fights and battles, our love of others and love of and for humanity, are not straight lines from point B to point z.

Yours Truly, Krisse Tuominen, rolling and wheeling like a genuine modern, skooter riding nomad

There's so many decisions, so many parallel Truths, crossing lifelines and crossing paths of lifetimes, parallel events, scenes and events. So many things happening at the same time and endless possibilities. And yet, the time of single life time is limited and so fragile. And there's so many ways to see and tell our lifes, our dreams, our hopes, our stuggles and our thriumps, because there is so many kind of humans, human lifes, human societies. And everything around our lives and around our small planet called Tellus.

No Stones UnTurned

It's not really a one genre and there's not really a single one real cyberpunkness. There's many ways to tell stories, involving societies struggling under pressure, under violent attacks, under demand of capitalistic consumerism, under multinational money hunger corporations. Under elite that dictates us how to live our own lives the way it "should be". And when You tell your story and stories to us on your own way, about sick (future or current) societies, and crippling society, there really isn't anyone who could really have a say about that. If it's cyberpunk to You, then, my cyberfellow, then cyberpunk it is. Fight for your right to tell your story, our story, our stories! Fight back, never surrender!

Yours Truly wearing a 3-ply bench-shirt and hip hop playing on da background... OG as F..?!

Doesn't really matter, is your way of expressing your feelings, your hopes, your dreams, your fascination of life and things that could be there, your story, your points of views,  a movie, a comic, a stand-up show, a drag show, a burlesque event, a Live-Action-Role-playing-Game, a digital poetry, performance, or a song, album, ep, pamflet, poster, or a band... It's your story and it's worth telling!

ELDALASH  makes french garage-punk-rock. The songs are simple, short, ugly, striking, and catchy. Videos are full of pictures of riots, violence, bloody faces, modern cyberpunkish weapons, riot gear, and mesmerizing images. I recommend You to check these videos above and below.

To some, cyberpunk is all about the looks and not so much about what lies in. To me the most interesting part of the cyberpunk genre is the setting, not the toppings and sugar coatings over it. I like the cyberpunk movies, books and games that has grounded themselves in the cyberpunk setting. I am not talking of  flashy lights in the neoncities, fast flying cars or the punk gang street kids. Those are legitimate cyberpunk stuff, but being more like the outsides, not the insides. I am talking about the big money hungry multinational corporations who [want to] own the World, the conspirations between the big corporations that are fighting over the supremacy of the Big Cities and over the whole wide world, cross-swindles that are dealt with diplomacy apparatus (not thru bloody mindless violence). I am talking about the startlingly gargantuan Net that is controlled by geographically huge goverments and corporations, the Cyber-Reality (that  reign over the every day live Reality) with its many fascinating and often deadly possibilities, the societies that are submerged by over-controlling (and over-controlled) consumerism, the deadly net viruses & data bugs that can fry user's brain and even kill people. To me all that is what cyberpunk is at its core.

The cool looks and "the right vibes" are more like just there to entertain the viewer. To make our brain go fuzzy, so it all feels more real and therefore dangerous than if it would be served on a pink flashy plate with rainbow food all over it. Well, this video is kinda looking like a surreal pink rainbow puke, but things that bubble on the inner essence of the video, are cyberpunk to the core. It has the money hungry big corporations that don't care about the lives of real people, they care about spreading the consumerism, even when it would eventially kill the consumer. Who cares, there's always another consumer who loves to consume pinky flashy shiny things. You can disagree with me and that's ok. But at least, I do view this as a cyberpunk video. And it is a deadly vehicle.

I like (science) fiction that is dreamy and trippy and still kept very simple. Pure simple forms. Nothing too much. Not less than Enough. Simple and clear, mezmerisingly beautiful, and yet so effective in opening many doors of our minds.. Those kind of fictional movies and scenes raise more questions than they like to give You answers. If they give You any answers at all. The Blade Runner, The Dune, The Lawnmower Man, The Total Recall, and even Nemesis, all have dreamy 'n' trippy scenes, where You really can't be sure what is dreaming, what is reality, what is imagination, what is Net or Cyber-Reality. Also I really enjoy the scenes where are (post-) Apocalyptic waste deserts. And You most often can't be sure is it in Mars, is it in Earth, in Dream Lands, in Another Galaxy/Reality/Parallel Reality or Parallel Time-Line, or is it just flow of imagination. Or somekind of Net Run, Shadow Run, Cyber Space Trip, or what ever You might call it. And in that sense, this short animated film, above,  falls in a cyberpunk category. Plus it has interesting technology, time or space travel, and it really makes your thoughts fly!

Logan's Run (1976) depicts a world of utopia. And behind the utopia is dystopia lurking. The All Judging "god" that is more than human and more than a robot that rules the world with the secretive elite society, that dictates what people are allow to do and what they are not. And the police guards people and hunts people who want to run (away). And after they get the runners, the police force excecutes the runners. You are never alone and your days are numbered. There's miracle of science and miracle of machines. And of course, there's rebellion. So, I think that it's safe to say, that Logan's run is cyberpunk movie, or at least: a proto-cyberpunk film.

I know that the video above is (post-) modern video that shows our current world (or what it was few years ago), but to me, this seem to have few cyberpunk scenes in it. The style is polished and varnished and it looks nice. Even utopian, looking, in to the certain extent. But it's sad and dangerous. Very powerful experience under the polished look.

Brazil (1985) is very surrealistic past from the past-future, if I dare to say that. Anyhow, it's a blast and heeelluva joy(?)ride to utopian future where of course hides(?) a ugly dystopian real world that is veeeery far from the All Happy Go Lucky Merry Go Round Utopian Happy Happy Joy Joy society. It's more like a nightmarish world where the reality is far worse than your nightmares. And that's a totally rad cyberpunk fantasy movie, to me. Not really a nice movie to watch, but it's worth to watch. Quite inspiring piece of movie art.

1984 (1984) is a fascist dystopian totalitarian future vision of the Year 1984, that luckily did not happen then. Sadly, the book and the movie is now very topical on the current situation of our modern world, that has slightly gone a bit maaaad. Very cyberpunk. The book, the movie. And our current reality.

Visuals in Blato Zlato's videos (above and belove) are very fitting to the modern, science fiction, dystopian future, and to the cyberpunk, settings. Music is also very soulful and brings certain nomad feeling to the scenes.

Ku-Ku band - Prituri sa planinata (video below) sounds and looks very eerie and

other-worldly, in a good way.

Because I like games, especially the tabletop roleplaying games, I want to mention couple examples of the different kind of world creating in the cyberpunk genre gaming. The first is Cyber Knights which sounds and looks very cartoonish action game. And, surprise surprise, it is digital rpg action game. But there's definately more than just good looks in this games. The creators have obviously taken some time to make a World for their game.

Yours Truly in da picture
Cybergod: Reborn is interesting tabletop roleplaying game in the making. It has its own game engine and the World is still work in the progress, but it seems and feels good. To me, at least. I like how it isn't just cyberpunk perce. It is science fiction roleplaying game that You can play with different styles. One of the possible styles is a Cyberpunk Film Noir. That kind of gaming world, I do find very interesting. So, all in all, it feels very promising. I totally recommend You all to check it out!

I hope You enjoyed the blog text. I wish You all great cyborgings and cyberpunkings and nice play sessions! Wishes Krisse Tuominen.
